Well, we headed off Thursday, Sept. 13th on our next little RV adventure. Originally we planned to head down thru Virginia and some of the Mid-Atlantic states on our way to Texas but with Hurricane Florence rearing her head, we changed course and went across New York State and and chose a more northwestern route. (We touched base via email with several sets of friends living in the Carolinas and hope they all remain safe and their properties do as well.)
The night before we departed we enjoyed a fabulous dinner and evening with Ellen & Wayne and heard all about their month long European adventure and talked about our upcoming one. They brought us back the cutest bells for our bikes that they picked up in Copenhagen. Love them! Can’t wait to put them on the bikes! We’ll miss you guys while we’re gone!!!
The first day’s travel was a good one crossing into New York and along the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. Beautiful country! We stopped at Villages RV Park at Turning Stone in Verona, NY. (Thanks Meigs and Paul for the recommendation!) Great campground, and for Gary’s benefit it’s near a casino so he could get his blackjack fix. Apparently his wearing my lucky pink banded i-watch didn’t bring him much luck this time. Such is life. While he gambled, I sat outside enjoying a very pleasant late afternoon… reading and I went for a great walk around their nature trails which included an environmental pond and fishing pond. This New England girl is wary of ticks in the woods so I was careful to stay on the path and avoid touching anything where creepy crawlies could live. Great walk! The environmental pond had all algae growing on it so it was one green solid icky mass (reminded me of Conservation Park in Panama City Beach just not quite as pristine… or big!)
Friday, Sept. 14th we headed off still crossing New York State, touching into Pennsylvania and landing in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio at a campground called Indian Creek RV & Camping Resort. The town gets bonus points for having such a cool name! Once again a gorgeous drive along I-90 with views of Lake Erie, vineyards and wide open green spaces. And, once again, this campground is fabulous. Spacious sites, and we have a great view of a pond. Lots of cute little geese around the pond, but since we don’t have to worry about Kya eating things she shouldn’t, all good…. although we do miss our baby girl. They have 600 sites here. Most of which are for seasonal folks. Maybe a 1/4 of the sites are for transients like us. We took a walk Friday night around the campground to check out this enclave. It’s like a city unto itself. You can tell who the transients are… their the ones waking. All the seasonal have golf carts. The campground is open year round, which I find somewhat hard to believe. I don’t think camping here in the dead of winter would be too enjoyable.
Saturday, Sept. 15th we headed to Geneva State Park, just a few miles away. It borders Lake Erie and has a wonderful 2 mile paved bike trail which we thoroughly enjoyed. We ended up parking in the middle so the 2 mile trail ended up being more like 4 miles since we did it twice. Good for us. Child’s play for many of you I know, but we’re not their yet! Great views of the boat marina, Lake Erie, the beach and the lodge. I can’t get over the lake, which looks more like an ocean. Wow… huge! We met a nice couple staying at the Lodge from Boston who had flown in for the weekend for a wedding. Lovely couple. We took their picture and they ours.
We found “the strip” at Geneva-on-the-Lake. Basically it’s the downtown shopping area. Not exactly charming…. touristy but not in a good way… in a sort of tacky way. But, their proximity to the lake is reason enough to be here. It’s amazing how ocean-like it is… except fresh water instead of salt water and you know, no waves. But other than that, identical!
We took a walk across the street at sunset to catch a view of Lake Erie with the setting sun over it. Beautiful. Looks like the ocean to me! No land in sight! On our walk back, two adolescent young boys on bikes were riding past us. One looks at me and says “excuse me, your shoe is untied.” I glance down. It’s not untied. I look back up at him. They both howl with laughter and ride off. The only thing they didn’t say was “made ya look.” As pranks go, pretty harmless.
On to the Elkhart, Indiana area tomorrow.
Beautiful lake country guys. Can’t wait to hear about Elkhart. My good friend is moving back there real soon. Still in the 80’s here in CT. Thinking of moving to Alaska! I can always dream. Have fun and be safe ❤️ Andrea
Thanks, Andrea! It’s in the high 80’s here and sunny! Haha. We’re off to explore Elkhart today.
I hope sometime you get to Holland Mi. Great sand dunes along Lake Michigan-another HUGE lake.
Enjoy!
Good reason to do another trip, Mary! Hope you and Ellen are enjoying yoga. You should be there right about now! xoxo
Thanks for the Update; Looking forward to seeing you guys.
Be safe
Luv
Bob
Thanks, Bob! We’re really looking forward to seeing all of you! xoxo
Glad you finally got a taste of the Great Lakes and some good weather to enjoy it. Enjoy Elkhart and visit the RV Hall of Fame and while touring it remember the movie ‘The Long, Long Trailer’ that we never got to finish. Somewhere in the Hall of Fame walkway is a brick with our names on it, though we haven’t returned to find it. Safe travels guys.
We thoroughly enjoyed the RV Museum… although I didn’t see this until after we’d been so I missed checking the bricks with your names! And, we still haven’t seen the rest of The Long, Long Trailer! Looking forward to seeing you guys… and the new house!
Have fun! Look forward to seeing y’all in October!!
Thanks, Misty! We can’t wait to see all of you either!
Hi, T & G!
I enjoy reading and your pictures. Sounds really fun! Yes, I love the cool name, Geneva on the Lake too!
(I’m late in responding, we have had our son and daughter-in-law from Bend, OR here which has been fun).
Take care,
Love,
D
Hi Dianne, so great to hear from you! Hope you had a wonderful visit with your family! xoxo
