Texarkana, TX

MON., MAY 1 thru FRI., MAY 5, 2023

We left Galveston May 1 (2023) with an overnight stop at Escapees RV Park in Livingston, TX and bumped into camping friends, Sue & Denny, who work camp at Stella Mare RV Resort in Galveston. Small world! We also met friends of theirs who were in Livingston for an extended stay because their truck engine seized up to the tune of $25,000, and they were facing a year wait for the fix. Oh my. I think the wait was due to no availability of the engine or parts. Wow.

The next day, May 2 ( 2023) we arrived at Rocky Point Campground on Wright Patman Lake. It’s a Corp. of Engineer park located outside Texarkana, TX. The lake is named after TX Congressman Wright Patman. Such a beautiful park! We’re hearing tons of songbirds during our stay and enjoyed “real” campfires 2 evenings. We spent a few days exploring the park before heading into downtown Texarkana.

The pod’s 4-night stay in Texarkana has gone quickly. Loved this sweet little campground on the Wright Patman Lake and near a dam. Thursday, 5/4 we headed into downtown Texarkana. Many old historic buildings being refurbished. As of now, it’s a work-in-progress but when completed, it could be a truly special downtown area.

We visited the Texarkana Post Office & Federal Courthouse. It straddles the Arkansas/Texas state line and is the only post office in the U.S. that sits in 2 states. We also visited the Ace of Clubs House. Built in 1885 in roughly the shape of the “club” figure on the ace of clubs card. According to legend, the house was built with money won from a poker game! It’s closed for renovations but the gate was open soooo we snuck a peek thru the glassed front door. Looks gorgeous and should be open in the fall.

We also visited Union Station. Sadly it’s deserted and closed but the door was unlocked so we very quietly went inside. Comically it’s located across the street from the police station but we managed not to get arrested. It was built in 1929 and is in surprisingly decent shape considering the door was left ajar on the day we visited. Who knows who else comes and goes from the property?! It reminded us a bit of Union Station in Denver. It could be something special when renovated.

Tomorrow we move on to Oklahoma.
