TUE., MAY 14th thru THUR., MAY 16th, 2024

Our pod (Cheryl, Joe, Gary & I) traveled 200 miles west and spent 3 nights in San Angelo TX, where I was born. We stayed at San Angelo State Park which has a gorgeous west Texas landscape with wide open spaces and some very nice sunsets. There were supposed to be bison in the park and longhorn cattle. Unfortunately, we saw none! But we did see lots of wildflowers and cactus blooming, which was a treat. Unfortunately the lake is very low at the state park.

Linda & brother Andy opted to stay in a nearby hotel for the 3 nights, rather than tow their 5th wheel over from Belton. We were grateful for their company and willingness to play tour guides. They brought me and our pod down memory lane, which was helpful since I moved from here when I was 4 years old.

The first night we hung out at the pool at L&A’s hotel then had dinner at Cielo Mexican Restaurant. You know it’s good when all the locals eat there!

The next day we explored the town of San Angelo. It’s got charm… the Concho River runs through town and there are lots of historic murals and colorful sheep sculptures scattered about. Our first stop was M.L. Leddy’s (Custom Boot Company). They began in the 1920s and are still going strong. My grandad worked there for years. They still have a picture of him on display. There’s an old fashioned General Store called Eggemeyer’s (est. in 1927)… which is fabulous and huge and offers an “authentic general store experience”. It did not disappoint. We even visited where I lived for the first 4 years of my life and my brothers lived there until high school. Unfortunately their hand prints from 1953 are no longer in evidence on the curb.

We also visited the International Waterlily Collection, considered one of the premier waterlily collections in the world. More on that further down in this post.

The following day it rained so the 6 of us played Mexican Train with about 4 different lead changes until Gary finally one. We all had dinner at our house sharing the bottle of wine that the Tise family gave Linda. It was excellent. Even Cheryl had some, who is not a red wine drinker, and proclaimed it “not that bad”. lol.  A storm came through that evening and there were some very dark clouds. Thankfully even with the big black clouds we just got rain, a tiny bit of hail, and a max wind gust of 41 mph. We’ve had worse!

Later that night it was time to say goodbye to L&A before we move on to Lubbock for a few days.

As previously mentioned, while in San Angelo we visited the International Waterlily Collection, considered one of the the premier waterlily collections in the world. Who knew?! The collection is the life work of one man, Ken Landon. He is considered one of the foremost experts on waterlilies alive today.  We were the only ones there when we visited and it was free! Soooo beautiful.
